FAXit for Windows, Release 1.31A 12-Feb-90
================================ =========
Demonstration Note:
-------------------
This demo disk only has drivers for the Intel Connection CoProcessor.
Please call alien at (805) 947-1310 for information on other FAX
boards and FAX machines supported by FAXit for Windows.
Installation:
-------------
To install FAXit in a full Windows environment:
1) Load Windows
2) Click on the -A- drive or press Ctrl+A
3) Run INSTALL.EXE
4) Enter the directory to install FAXit in, and your Windows directory
5) Select your FAX board from the list of boards
6) Enter the connection for your board if default is incorrect
7) Press OK and files will be copied
8) Set FAXit options; User Details and Directories are most important
9) To send a FAX, issue File/Print from any Windows application
To install FAXit in a run-time Windows environment:
1) Log on to the A: drive
2) From the DOS A> prompt, run INSTALLR.EXE
3) Select your FAX board from the list of boards
4) Enter the connection for your board if default is incorrect
5) Enter the directory to install FAXit in, and your run-time Windows dir.
6) Files will then be copied
7) Load your run-time Windows application and run Printer Setup (or similar)
8) Set FAXit options; User Details and Directories are most important
9) To send a FAX, issue File/Print from your run-time Windows application

Users upgrading from previous versions:
---------------------------------------
1) Due to a bug in previous versions of FAXit, phonebook entries
would sometimes disappear, or you would occasionally get an "out
of memory" error from the phonebook when there was obviously
enough memory to work with. This bug has been fixed, but it is
important that if you are upgrading from an older version of
FAXit you create a new, empty, phonebook and use the new Merge
commmand, described above, to merge your old phonebook into the
new one. This will repair any broken phonebook entries and tell
you if any were unrecoverable. Finally, delete your old
phonebook and continue with the new phonebook created with this
version of FAXit.
2) The 1.20 install programs make a backup of the default
phonebook, FAXNUMS.FXD when upgrading an older version of FAXit.
The backup is named FAXNUMS.BAK, and can be copied back over
FAXNUMS.FXD if you want to continue using it.
Intel Connection CoProcessor:
-----------------------------
1) If you are using CCAM version 1.11 or previous, you need to
copy the CCAMMLTI.COM program from this disk into your CONNECT
directory and add it to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
To do this, first check CCAM's version number. Make sure you are
at a DOS prompt, and then change to the directory where you
installed the Intel software (normally C:\CONNECT) and run CCAM.
A message similar to the following will be displayed:
Connection CoProcessor Applications Manager (CCAM)
Version x.xx
If the version number displayed is 1.11 or LESS, do the following
when you are at a DOS prompt (assuming the FAXit program disk is
in A: and the Intel software is installed in C:\CONNECT;
substitute your drive/directories if different):
COPY A:CCAMMLTI.COM C:\CONNECT
Once CCAMMLTI.COM is copied, you need to add it to your AUTOEXEC.BAT
file. To do this, you must first load AUTOEXEC.BAT into an
editor (EDLIN or some other DOS editor will do, so will NOTEPAD
in Windows) and find the line which says:
C:\CONNECT\CCAM C:\CONNECT\CCAM.CFG
and add IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING that line, the line:
C:\CONNECT\CCAMMLTI
Save the modified AUTOEXEC.BAT and reboot your computer. Make
sure that following the CCAM signon you see a message similar to:
CCAM-MULTI: Enable CCAM Multitasking
...
CCAM is running multitasking
xxx bytes used
2) Memory Management: Intel's CCAM program (installed in your
AUTOEXEC.BAT file) requires about 64K of memory; this can
seriously affect the performance of Windows.
In order to alleviate this, CCAM will place 60K of itself into
EMS (exPANded) memory, if available, so it is recommended that
to maintain full Windows performance you make some EMS memory
available on your system for CCAM to use. Most 286-based
computers with memory expansion boards have switches on the
boards which allow some of the memory to be addressed as EMS
memory. Please do this before running the Windows/Intel
Connection CoProcessor combination.
Unfortunately, 386-based computers rarely have memory that can
be addressed as EMS memory; their memory is usually exTENded
memory, which can not be directly addressed by Windows or the
Intel software. Even though Windows/386 does convert the
exTENded memory to exPANded memory so that it can be used by
Windows applications, programs loaded before Windows/386 (as is
the CCAM program) will not see this memory.
As a result, CCAM takes a full 64K of DOS memory when running
with Windows/386. Please be aware of this when using the
Windows/386 / Intel Connection CoProcessor combination.
A good solution for 386-based PCs is to use a memory management
program such as 386MAX (available from Intel) or QEMM (available
from Quarterdeck). These programs convert the 386's exTENded
memory into exPANded memory, thus allowing CCAM to use less DOS
memory. Note, however, that Windows/386 does not run with these
memory management programs since it uses the same protected mode
addressing mechanism. As a result, you must use Windows/286, NOT
Windows/386 when using the memory manager/Intel Connection
CoProcessor combination.
